Power steering is what makes it almost effortless to turn the steering wheel, aiming your vehicle in the direction you want to go. Without the assistance of power from the engine, steering would be a laborious process, so you want to make sure the system is working well. Power steering systems are usually one of two types, hydraulic and electric. The hydraulic type uses a pump that is driven by either a belt or an electric motor. This system uses hydraulic fluid to create pressure that gives your steering the power assist. Since that pump is always working, time and distance traveled eventually take their toll, and these systems need to be periodically inspected. Also, while that hydraulic fluid can last for years, it should be replaced periodically as it degrades over time. Your vehicle's owner's manual contains the manufacturer's recommendations. A technician can check for leaks in the hoses, pump housing or reservoir. Also, the belts should be inspected and so should the pump, as these can fail. Signs of a failing pump are a groaning noise when you turn the steering wheel, stiff steering, squealing noises when you first start your car and puddles of a reddish-brown fluid under your vehicle. The other type is called EPS, or electric power steering, which is becoming more commonly used in the latest vehicles. It only delivers power assist when you need it and has an electric motor that supplies that steering help. It's more efficient, accurate, compact and clean. And because it has a lot fewer components, it's easier to maintain. If you have electric power steering, you may notice sometimes it's hard to turn the wheel or your Check Engine light comes on. Sometimes the power assist motor fails or there can be problems with electrical connections. Any time you have symptoms, it's important for your safety and that of drivers around you that you have a technician check them out. Properly working brakes are essential for the safe operation of any vehicle. Stop! And make sure yours are working properly.
The Right Oil for the Season (Engine Oil Viscosity)Posted January 19, 2025 3:16 AMAs the temperatures plunge, certain types of engine oil may not flow as easily as they did when it was warmer. Makes sense, doesn't it? Just like molasses gets thicker as the temperature goes down, engine oil does the same thing. So, maybe you're wondering if you have to change your oil as the seasons change so it's just the right thickness to lubricate your engine parts. How well engine oil flows is called its viscosity. There are different types of oil—some that have just one viscosity and others called "multigrade" oils. Here's the difference. A single viscosity oil will flow better when it's hot but not as well when it's cold. A multigrade oil is engineered so that its flow properties at cold temperatures are different than they are at warm temperatures. In other words, a multigrade oil can start out in colder temperatures acting like a thinner oil and then behave like a thicker oil when it's warm. That's a pretty cool trick and it's why multigrade engine oil is used in nearly all vehicles. Your vehicle's manufacturer has the correct viscosity of oil for your particular model included in the owner's manual. Another choice you have to make when it comes to engine oil is whether you use conventional oil, synthetic oil or a blend of the two. Synthetic oils have some advantages over conventional, such as resisting breakdown better and withstanding higher temperatures. Check with your service advisor to see which viscosity and type of oil is recommended for your vehicle. It's important that in cold weather, the oil flows through your engine at the right thickness so that parts are being properly lubricated. That will make sure you'll get good fuel economy and performance, no matter what the temperature is.

The Part You've Never Seen (Flat Tires and Solutions)Posted January 5, 2025 3:18 AMThey say your vehicle has one, but you've never seen it. And you might not even know it if you stumbled on it accidentally. We're talking about the jack, that tool that allows you to lift one corner of the vehicle up so someone can change a flat tire. So you say you'd never try to change a flat anyway, so you don't care where it is. But one day, you may find yourself in a spot where you're stranded with no cell service and you'll need to at least know the basics of what to do. Well, here's the ironic part. Many of today's vehicles don't even have jacks and spares! Recently, manufacturers have been saving weight by supplying another solution for a flat tire, such as an inflator kit that has a tire sealant in it, or a small compressor. If your vehicle has one of those, it's a good idea to get to know how to use it before you need to use it. Hopefully you'll be able to call roadside assistance and they can take care of things, but circumstances may prevent help from coming for a long time. The next time you're here at Darrell's Firestone for routine maintenance, ask one of our pros to show you the basics of your vehicle's flat tire tools. Consider watching an online video, too; there are plenty out there and may be specific to your make and model. Some vehicles have a space-saving spare, a smaller one that is meant to get you on the road long enough to find a place to have it repaired or replaced. Those vehicles will also have a jack. Then there are vehicles that have a full-size spare tire and a jack. Again, you may prefer to call roadside assistance, but if no one is available or reachable (which is sometimes the case in a major storm), you may have to fix your own flat. Some drivers do a "dry run" of changing a tire in their driveway during daylight hours so they at least know where the jack and spare are and how to use them. And again, there are many videos online that can show you the fundamentals of jacking your make and model of vehicle. Nobody relishes a flat tire. You may be lucky and never have to change one. But in this case, a little knowledge is better than no knowledge at all. In the unlikely case you are stranded at the side of a highway at night in the middle of the rain with no cell service, you'll at least be one step ahead.
